How to Confidently Prepare Your Little One for Swimming Lessons at Zogs Swim School

Starting swimming lessons is a big step for many children—and their parents too. At Zogs Swim School, we understand that the more prepared and confident your child feels before entering the pool, the more positive and successful their swim journey will be.

Here are practical, gentle ways to get your child ready for swimming lessons—whether it’s their very first time or they’re returning after a break.

1. Start with Water Play at Home

Getting comfortable in water can begin long before your child steps into the pool. During bath time:

These simple activities help children associate water with play and relaxation, setting a solid foundation for lessons.

2. Practice Blowing Bubbles and Holding Breath

Breath control is an essential swimming skill. You can gently introduce it at home by:

This early exposure helps children feel more in control when learning submersion and floating techniques.

3. Talk Positively About Swim Class

Children take cues from their parents. Speak about swim lessons with excitement, not anxiety. You could say:

Avoid introducing fear-based language like “Don’t be scared” or “It’s okay if you cry.” Instead, frame it as an adventure and a new skill to explore.

4. Let Them Visit the Swim School

If possible, bring your child to visit Zogs before their first class. Let them:

This reduces the “fear of the unknown” and gives them a visual and sensory understanding of what to expect.

5. Pack a Familiar and Comfortable Swim Bag

Involve your child in packing their swim bag. Essentials include:

Adding a small comfort item—like a favourite towel or water bottle—can ease nerves.

6. Stay Patient and Consistent

It’s normal for some children to feel nervous in the first few lessons. The key is consistency and gentle encouragement. Our instructors are trained to work with shy or hesitant swimmers and will support your child every step of the way.

Most children build confidence quickly with our supportive, play-based approach.

A Note for Parents: What If My Child Cries?

This is very common in the first few sessions. The best thing you can do is stay calm and trust the process. Our team is experienced in helping children settle in gently, without pressure or fear. With patience and routine, most children soon can’t wait to jump into the pool!
